Beer as a Writing Prompt

Beer as a Writing Prompt

It's no secret to my friends and family that I love beer. If anyone is ever at a loose end on what to get me as a gift, beer is a pretty safe bet. I'm generally quite difficult to buy for, so it's not got to the point where it's a family joke; not whether to get me beer, but what to get that I may have not tried yet.

2020 has been kinda fucked up in many ways, but kinda awesome in may others. My business had its best year yet, and then I got a proper job, so with my newly-found financial success (funny…), I thought I'd treat myself to a £50 advent calendar full of beer. More specifically, the BrewDog Craft Beer Advent Calendar.

I want to write more, so thought doing a little write-up each day on that days beer would be a good way to form the habit. So from tomorrow, i'll post something each day up until Christmas eve, and I'll list each of those below as I go, turning this post into a table of contents. 🍻

Beer Advent 2020: BrewDog Punk IPA
In many ways, writing about this is as easy as it is hard – Brewdog’s Punk IPAis their most popular, most widely available beer. It has crafty roots andhigh-street sales. It is to beer what the BMW is to cars. On one end of thescale, you have Ford, at the other end you have Ferrari. Value wine, a…

Beer Advent 2020: BrewDog Jet Stream
Jet Stream is collaboration[] with BritishAirways. As such, it’s designed to have a broad appeal – to appease those lockedin a tin can at 38,000ft. It’s labeled as a pale ale. To me, it smells like larger. It has a slightlybitter, almost …

Beer Advent 2020: BrewDog Hazy Jane
Bright, hoppy, and full bodied. Hazy Jane is a New England IPA, that is, as thename suggests, hazy. Generally speaking, the harder it is to see through a beer, the more I like it. This makes Hazy Jane a perfect summer drink for me, where aheavy porter wouldn’t seem right. It has a pleasant bitter…

Beer Advent 2020: BrewDog Snowball
Well this is interesting — there’s a subtle smell of cream soda. It smells good,or at least it smells intriguing. That good smell is not couple with a goodtaste though. To me, there’s a chemical taste on every sip, and that’s apparent when drinkingand in the aftertaste. Tangent time: I bite my …

Beer Advent 2020: BrewDog Double Punk
I took this can out of todays slot in the advent calendar, and audibly said“Ooh!”, so I immediately had high expectations. I wasn’t disappointed. The side of the can states “The beer that started it all. Amplified.” I would100% agree with that statement. It tastes just like Punk IPA, but more. It…

Beer Advent 2020: BrewDog vs Cloudwater New England IPA
The side of the can says, a “juicy New England IPA packs more fruit than thestate of Florida”. Yep, it looks like orange juice. I have a huge soft spot forbeer that tastes like beer, but also has a decent hint of another flavour, andthis absolutely has a pleasantly tropical taste. It’s lightly c…

Beer Advent 2020: BrewDog Lightspeed
It smells like fruit juice, and I don’t mean a fruity beer, but literal fruitjuice – it smells amazing, and tastes like fizzy fruit juice, but with a hint ofbeer. Lightspeed is BrewDog’s offering to the low calorie market. Typically, the low anything drinks of any variety taste weak. The low or …

Beer Advent 2020: BrewDog Dead Pony Club
Dead Pony Club has been around for a while, and is freely available insupermarkets. And yet, I skip it when picking that weeks choice of beer. After afew sips, I’m left questioning myself. Here’s an old review[] on Be…

Beer Advent 2020: BrewDog Duopolis
I’m starting to get the feeling Brewdog really like to produce fruity beers, because that’s what this is. In a sense, it tastes a lot like Lightspeed[/beer-advent-2020-brewdog-light-speed/] from a couple days back, but with a bitmore oomph. It has a thicker texture than Lightspeed, and more depth…

Beer Advent 2020: BrewDog Fake Empire
Well this is interesting. The description (Sour Hazy IPA) is a contradiction interms. Is it a Sour or is it an IPA. Oddly, it manages to achieve both. I’ve had a few Sours before, and each of those was not to my taste at all. WhenI read the description this morning, I was a little let down. But, …

Beer Advent 2020: BrewDog O-G Hazy
For the second day in a row, todays beer isn’t pure fruit; i’m liking thistrend. At 7.2%, it’s on the stronger end of beers, but my no means high. It packs apunch, though it disguises its strength fairly well I’ll be honest, I’m struggling to write about this beer. It’s neither amazingnor borin…

Beer Advent 2020: BrewDog Lock Down
Before even opening the can, there’s a few things that excite me: * The can has a printed label, which makes me think this brewed in a smaller than normal batch * It has grapefruit in it, which one of my favourite BrewDog beers also has (Elvis Juice) – my expectations are high * It’s a pil…

Beer Advent 2020: BrewDog Jack Hammer
Feels like it’s been ages since I’ve had a normal beer. In reality, it’s been acouple days. Jack Hammer just feels like a good beer. It’s simple, but simple in the best waypossible. It’s hoppy, it’s a little bitter, and reasonably strong (7.2%).There’s a pleasant aftertaste that lingers, and it …

Beer Advent 2020: BrewDog Pale Ale
I wrote about 10 crappy jokes about this beers name. It’s almost like BrewDog’smarketing department were off that day. Or, they’re geniouses of epicproportions. I dunno. If they can use siplistic naming, I can employ a simplistic choice in glass: theone nearest the front of the cudboard – a gin …

Beer Advent 2020: BrewDog Clockwork
I must admit, I took the can ot of te box, saw the orange colour, and instantlythought “Oh shit, I’ve had this before and hated it.” Thankfully, Brewdog have either since changed the recipe, or I was having a badday. Clockwork is a Tangerine Session IPA, and it certainly smells citrusy. As with…

Beer Advent 2020: BrewDog Lost Lager
Much like the Pale Ale [/beer-advent-2020-brewdog-pale-ale/] from a few daysback, this does exatly what it says on the tin. It’s a larger, but has whatother lagers seem to have lost: character. BrewDog sells this in supermarkets in boxes of 12, a large quantity by theirstandards, so it defiitel…
